Just frozen. In the old days, that meant ten minutes of dead air, a teacher sweating while double-clicking on random menus, and thirty kids pulling out phones. It’s the... the ultimate tax, the translation tax we pay just trying to make cold machines understand messy, human thoughts.

But the book is very relevant here because Zach and I argue that the real value of human labor isn't speed or-or clinical perfection. It’s the messy, iterative process of thinking. The GPS Paradox on Steroids and the Death of Cognitive Friction

It's like... it's like the GPS paradox, right? But on serious steroids. Think about it—ten, fifteen years ago, if you wanted to get somewhere, you actually had to hold a physical map, look at the street signs, build a mental picture. Now? If the phone signal drops in a car park, people start sweating. They panic because they've completely outsourced their internal compass to a voice in their dashboard. I- I- I actually got flat out lost on my trail bike up in the Watagans a few months back. My digital GPS died, and mate, I had no bloody clue which way was north. I was just staring at trees like a stunned mullet.

Stunned mullet. (laughs) I love that. But it's true! If you don't struggle to navigate, that part of your brain literally goes to sleep. So, if we apply that to classrooms—if the AI blackboard instantly corrects every bad geometric drawing before a kid can even process why it was wrong—are we just breeding intellectual brittleness? Are we making kids who fold the second they hit a real-world problem that doesn't have an auto-correct button?

Exactly. We're engineering a world of frictionless experiences, but cognitive friction is-is where critical thinking is forged. In cognitive psychology, there's this concept of "desirable difficulties." The struggle to draw the shape, to-to map the function manually, that’s what actually builds the neural pathways. When you eliminate that struggle, you aren't educating. You’re just training people to be passive users of elegant systems. You're creating sheep for the algorithmic slaughterhouse.

Too right, CJ. If we don't skin our knuckles on the hard stuff, we don't learn how to fix the bike when it breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Leaders and organizations need to start thinking about "friction by design." We shouldn't be asking "how do we automate this completely?" We should be asking "which parts of the struggle are actually worth keeping so our people don't lose their edge?"
